The one time I used that old parenting line, "don't make me come up there," I lived to regret it.
My older son was about 12, and he had a friend spending the night. This friend liked to eat toast for breakfast, and my son was busy telling him the tale of how he had put his toast back into the toaster oven for a second cycle, so it could get extra brown. It got brown all right--and then burst into flame.
Naturally, the other boy was impressed by this, and I warned the boys to be careful with the toaster.
The next thing I knew, they were running around yelling, "The toast is on fire!"
"It is not," I said. "Stop fooling around. That's not funny."
"No, Mom, it's really on fire!"
Still convinced that this was all a joke, I coldly informed them, "If I come up into the kitchen and that toaster oven isn't on fire, you're going to be in a lot of trouble."
Logic--don't you love it?
I came upstairs, saw the flames, unplugged the oven and threw it out the front door.
We went shopping for a new toaster oven that afternoon.
