I've mentioned before that my family is big into Scouting. And some of the neighborhood kids are equally involved. 
My youngest has one friend who was captivated by the Cub Scouts' annual Pinewood Derby. He just loved building, painting, and racing his car. He would bring that car here for weeks after the Derby took place, in the hopes that he'd be able to race it again.
One day he figured out a way to do that. In our yard, we have a large play structure. He pulled up the wagon, grabbed a few spare boards he found in our garage, and went to work setting up his own race track. Then he climbed up to the top, lay down, and sent his car whizzing down the slide.
This picture captured his racetrack-in-progress. It was fun to watch this young engineer as he refined the design. Backyard slides aren't just for kindergarteners anymore!
