It was a task long overdue: cleaning the basement.
In my house, part of the basement is finished, and my husband has been using that as office space. The rest of it contains our pantry, laundry and utility area, and plenty of (overstuffed) storage.
I'd done it before, so I know I could do it again. I've been spending time sorting, tossing, and bagging things up for giveaway. And I found some interesting stuff:
- twenty-year-old road maps
- a quart-size ziploc bag of baby spoons (the "baby" is seven and a half)
- an icing tub filled with sippy-cup lids
- random jigsaw puzzle pieces
- many marbles
- plastic Easter eggs (I also found a couple of those on the dining-room sideboard. Like Christmas-tree needles, they seem to never really go away.)
- Enough bubble wrap to fill a box 20X12X12 (no, I didn't measure it. The dimensions are marked on the bottom of the box.)
- Lids without containers. And containers without lids. None of them matched each other.
The one thing I still need for the basement is a battery-operated "touch lamp" that I can put in the tool-and-gadget area pictured at right. There's not enough light in there to see where the different thingamajigs are kept, so it's become too easy for everyone to just toss things wherever. Shedding a little light on the situation will help a lot. And I know there's a flashlight in the picture, but those things never stay on the shelf long, especially on fall weekends when the kids decide to play Flashlight Tag.
