One of my favorite children's books is Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 
I read it over and over again, and had nearly all the Oompa-Loompa songs memorized. (They're a lot longer in the book than they are in the Gene Wilder version of the movie, by the way. I can't speak for the newer version, as I've never seen that one.)
I particularly enjoy the suspense in the beginning of the book when Charlie is hoping he can get a Golden Ticket to see the inside the chocolate factory. That part of the book is a real nail-biter. First of all, Charlie has no money for food for his family, never mind chocolate for himself. Second, four of the five Golden Tickets are snapped up in short order, some by children whose families can afford to purchase cases upon cases of chocolate for their children. So when Charlie finds some money half-buried in a snowbank and decides to use some of it to buy a Wonka bar, the reader can't help but wish that he also finds a Golden Ticket. And when he does, you find yourself cheering for the little boy as he evades a greedy pack of people and the scary-looking Wonka competitor who offers him a fortune for selling the secrets to the famous candy. Fortunately, the man at the newsstand helps Charlie get away. Sweet.
