It's not too early to start thinking about Halloween costumes for your kids. I know my kids have been planning theirs ever since last Halloween! Of course, they've changed their minds countless times, and will again--but in a couple of weeks it will be time for me to lay down the law and tell them that it's time for their Final Answer. What will they be for Halloween?
One of my favorite costumes was one I made myself, the year my youngest was a toddler and he went as Curious George. It was easy, cute, and comfortable for him, as it was made almost completely out of clothes he was already used to wearing. Having gone down that road before, I knew that wiggly toddlers and itchy, unfamiliar costumes don't always make for smooth sailing on Halloween night. It's much easier when kids are older and they don't mind making a few sacrifices of personal comfort in order to wear the costume of their choice.
Halloween-costume planning can be difficult in areas like mine, where it is usually cold on October 31. I can't tell you how many fights I've had (usually with my daughter) regarding the choice of a sleeveless costume or one that involves wearing shorts instead of long pants or a long skirt. And putting a sweater or jacket over the costume? That would be scarier than "ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties and things that go BUMP in the night," according to the kids. Instead, I've come to rely on making sure the costume is large enough to fit an extra layer (or two) underneath.
