Our second-grader is a big fan of board games. 
I suspect that this is because board games require more than one player, and he is not the kind of kid who likes to do anything alone. He requires companions at all times; all during summer vacation he's barely out of bed before he asks if he can get on his bike to go look for his friends down the street.
His current favorite games are Yahtzee, the aptly-named Aggravation, and Monopoly. That last is a fun game, but not with a seven-year-old. For one thing, it takes hours to play. It can be a blast when there are several competitive adults with good senses of humor. It can be a nightmare with a second-grader who doesn't like to lose.
And the only thing worse than listening to a bunch of second-grade boys dissolve into fistfights amid shouts of "he cheated" is forcing them to clean up all the pieces of the game before they run outside to wave light sabers around. For little boys, cleaning up is a fate worse than death.
