Yesterday was the first day of fall--can you believe it? It's time to start doing that fall cleaning, and I even saw a neighbor raking leaves already!
I actually began my fall cleaning last week when it got chilly one day. I went around the house turning off all the ceiling fans that had been on, nonstop, since May.
Do you have any idea what happens to ceiling fans when they spin continuously for four months? I have never seen such fuzzy ceiling fans in all my life. Entire colonies of dust bunnies were living on each blade of each fan--to the point where some of them were being spun off and clinging to the ceiling or walls.
My older son is taking Physics this year. I think I'm going to get him to find out how spinning fan blades can manage to attract so much dust. Wouldn't it make more sense for the fans to get dusty when they're not turned on?
It's a good thing my mom told me about the pillowcase trick for cleaning ceiling fans: take an old pillowcase. Slip it over the fan blade, gather the fabric close to the blade and as you slowly remove the pillowcase, the dust will come off the fan and stay inside the pillowcase. Afterward, take the dust-filled pillowcase outside and turn it inside out to shake away all the dust.
Now my fans are nice and clean, just in time for Indian Summer, when I'll need to turn them on all over again.
