I took my daughter shopping for jeans last weekend. 
Normally she just grabs the clothes she wants and is ready to pay for them without even trying them on. I convinced her that it was a good idea to try on the new jeans, especially since she was looking for a different style than she usually wears.
She left me to wander around the junior department while she headed for the dressing room. Suddenly, my cell phone chimed with a text-message notice that the jeans didn't fit. Would I find the same ones in a different size?
It was a very quiet, but efficient way to get that done. I didn't have to hover just outside the fitting-room door, waiting for her to yell for me. And I have to admit that I'd never have thought of using my cell phone to do that!
Since we shopped the Labor Day sales, she managed to find three new pairs of jeans and a hoodie and still stay within the budget I'd set for her. And since she used her cell phone to tell me when she needed different sizes to try on, we stayed well within our time limit as well. All in all, it was a great shopping trip.

Oh great, another reason my 11 year old will give me to buy her a cell phone.
Been there, done that! My daughter and her friend used to write and perform PLAYS to demonstrate to us (and the friend's parents) why they needed cell phones. We all held out until they turned 13.
