Today is Saint Swithin's Day. He's nowhere near as well-known as Saint Patrick, but if you're a fan of the old TV show M*A*S*H, then you might have heard his name mentioned. This was during an episode that takes place in winter, and Major Winchester leaves the camp without checking in with Colonel Potter. When Potter finds out that Winchester is unavailable to help in surgery, he vows to make Winchester suffer until Saint Swithin's Day. 
There's an old rhyme about this day, relating to a belief about how the weather on this day affects the weather of the days to come:
St Swithin's Day, if it does rain
Full forty days, it will remain
St Swithin's Day, if it be fair
For forty days, t'will rain no more.
It's kind of like the Groundhog Day of summer. Saint Swithin was British, so you have to wonder if this only works in the United Kingdom. Those of us who live in the Northeast have practically already endured 40 days of rain--the month of June was unusually wet. That's great for the blueberries, but all that rain got old real fast. I had no idea that we could grow so many mushrooms in the front yard!
Since we're definitely not in danger of drought around here (we're right on track for year-to-date rainfall in the Philly area) I'll be hoping that Saint Swithin's Day brings bright, sunny weather that will carry us through the rest of the summer.
