If you're hooked on those wedding reality shows that have popped up all over the cable-TV channels, you've seen more than your share of wedding cakes.
I had no idea, when I got married 18 years ago, that a wedding cake could be more than the traditional three-tiered, buttercream-frosted cake. And since I've always lived north of the Mason-Dixon line, the idea of a groom's cake was completely foreign to me. I first learned of those when I watched the movie Steel Magnolias.
But now that brides have watched Ace of Cakes, they've learned that there are options out there. Wedding cakes can be as unique as the bride and groom themselves. Tiered cakes can be adorned with butterflies, topped with Beanie Babies, or square instead of round. They can show off real photos or even real flowers. I've seen Dr. Seuss-inspired cakes that defy gravity, looking like they'll tip over any second.
And if you want to go beyond the traditional tiers, the sky's the limit. Have your cake in any shape you want! There are Star Wars and Star Trek cakes, or cakes that look like princess castles. Why not make your cake tiers in the shape of suitcases of different sizes, with a bride and groom dressed for travel on the top?
The possibilities are endless. But in a way, I'm glad that my husband and I weren't presented with all those possibilities when we were planning our wedding. It was hard enough to decide what kind of filling would go between the layers of cake.

i'm looking for the perfect cake right now but i don't have the money to spend on an 'ace' cake or something similar, i really just want something simple. nice post, i'll check this out.
Cause its there cake....what if you had a wedding and you let your cousins aunt's brothers cousin cut the cake....don't you want to smash the cake into your husbands/wife's face? if it is for a birthday I don't think the person honored has to cut the cake per say but they should get the first piece that's how I do it.
Im trying to find a college course on making wedding cakes and i've had no luck.
I just wondered if anybody knows of any courses etc....
Here's a different idea - why not make a cupcake wedding cake? They're easy to make & everyone gets their own individual one! Thats what I did for mine!thnx
I think that traditional still shows the most class. There are times fof fun cakes a few years after you get married and are making a birthday cake for your two year old... Then your Dr. Seuss cake will make a little more sense...
