One of the cool things about having Scouts in the family is the Cub Pack's annual Rocket Night. 
The Boy Scouts help with this event by assembling the rockets, setting up the launch pads and performing the actual launch. (This makes the Cub Scout moms happy, since it means that their boys aren't dealing with actual fire. Yes, there's fire. How else do you think we'd get the Boy Scouts to participate?)
The Cub Scouts have two jobs: each Cub has a chance to help load the (reusable) rocket with the ignition pac, before any fire is involved; the Cubs are also in charge of search-and-recovery missions.
There always seems to be one rocket lost on Rocket Night. Last year, despite the entire Cub Pack who searched the woods, and the three Boy Scouts with mountain bikes, we couldn't find one of the rockets. For all we know, it crossed the river into Philadelphia.
This year, a rocket found its way to the roof of the building where the Scouts meet. Fortunately, by the time the rocket lands, there is no longer any fire--so there were no worries there.
Rocket Night is a lot of fun for the boys, and they learn something too. That's how it works in Scouts. Who knows: maybe one of the kids will be inspired to excel in science and head toward a career with NASA.
