Whatever you call it, we need one. 
The last living-room set we bought just didn't hold up. It's eight years old and it has had it. The living room isn't the most-used room in our house, but it's not one of those museum rooms that no one will go into, either. And the sofa and love seat are hanging on by a thread.
I've already done some repairs to the cushions, because the fabric started to fray near the seams. I'm no seamstress or reupholsterer, but it looks a little better than it did before. And then there's the arm of the love seat--the arm that my first-grader likes to vault over several times a day. With dirty hands (he always seems to have dirty hands). It's no surprise that the fabric there is several shades darker than it is on the other parts of the love seat. I try to disguise it with a throw, but people (like me) insist on using that as a blanket while sitting there and enjoying a book, so the camouflage doesn't last long.
Slipcovers were an option until we noticed that when someone sits on the couch, the cushion sinks really far down into the frame. So I don't think simply covering up the sofa is going to help any.
