It's a good thing that broken dishes, unlike broken mirrors, don't bring you seven years of bad luck. Otherwise, my seventh-grader would be looking at more years of bad luck than she's been alive. 
In the past three weeks she has broken two kitchen bowls that have served, collectively, about sixty years in my kitchen and, in the case of one of them, in my great-aunt's Anna's. She didn't break them on purpose, but both those dishes are going to be tough to replace.
The first one was a twenty-year-old small Corningware "Visions" dish with a lid. It could be used in the microwave, oven or on the stovetop. It was great for heating leftovers for one without the "ick" factor of using plastic in the microwave. I bought that dish and its even smaller companion when I had my first apartment.
The second one was the lone soup bowl that was left in the set of "Shop Rite dishes" my great-aunt used to have. She and her sister had collected a whole set, a few dishes at a time, each week as the supermarket would put out a new dish or serving piece. Classic '70s harvest gold with flowers, these stoneware dishes were used for decades. I used that soup bowl, not for soup, but for dinner prep. It was just the right size to dip chicken into an egg mix before breading it, or dipping French toast before cooking.
So both of those are gone now, and I need to find myself a couple of new replacements for those kitchen workhorses.
My husband would say that neither of these dishes owe me anything. They were used often and used well.
