At the end of the street where I spent my childhood, 
there was a large florist shop with two big display windows. Since the shop was located at a busy five-way intersection, we were often afforded ample time to enjoy the window decorations. To my young eyes, the floral arrangements were beautiful enough to be mini-Rose Bowl floats, and for a while I harbored a secret dream to be a window decorator like Rhoda from the Mary Tyler Moore show. (That was before I discovered that I have a black thumb and lots of allergies!)
We surmised that the displays must have been changed in the middle of hte night, since we never saw anyone working on them. I know we all wished for the enormous stuffed animals that were often included in the setups. And I always wondered, once I learned how to read, about the meaning of the mysterious phrase in foot-high neon letters: FLOWERS TELEGRAPHED. Between the two words was a 3-D globe.
My brother worked there after he got his driver's license. I don't think he ever saw, let alone used, a telegraph machine while on the job. He was kept very busy delivering birthday bouquets and funeral arrangements, among other things. But Mother's Day was one of his busiest occasions.
Now that you can order flowers online, I doubt that the FLOWERS TELEGRAPHED sign lights up anymore. I wonder if they've taken it down.
