I'll bet you buy the same brand of peanut butter your mom served you when you were a kid. Same with tuna, mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard.
For some reason, lunch is the meal that brings back more memories for me than any other. I suspect that the same will be true for my nieces and nephews as well; each time they visit my mom at lunchtime, they want "circle soup" (Lipton Ring-O-Noodle soup). She served it to them once and it became a tradition.
My kind of comfort food isn't soup, however; it's sandwiches. I always cut my sandwiches on the diagonal because that's the way my grandmother cut them whenever she made us lunch. I don't think I've ever served my kids sandwiches cut in rectangles.
My grandmother also made the best hamburgers ever: fried in plenty of butter, and served on a soft bun with Heinz ketchup.
And then there's the famous tuna sandwich that we used to get when we visited our great-aunts. Mix Bumble-bee tuna (solid white) with Miracle Whip. Spread softened butter on Wonder bread before adding the tuna salad to the sandwich.
When you want comfort food, you don't care about calories, fat and cholesterol. Sometimes a little of a bad thing can be a good thing. I just hope that kids growing up today will have fond memories of a lunch that doesn't include macaroni and cheese.
