I joined facebook to keep up with my kids--and rediscovered friends and acquaintances from long ago (we won't say how long.) My kids think it would be funny if I joined the "Keep Parents Off Facebook" group on facebook. They're crazy like that.
On Tuesday a big story hit the tech news: a new browser is launching this month. But it won't just find you links with the information you want. It'll analyze the information and build a web page with it--provided you phrase your question just right. The Wolfram Alpha browser is designed to deal with more technical information rather than pop culture stuff, so don't expect it to replace Google. And then there's the issue of the name. Can you picture your tween saying, "I don't know that answer. Hang on, let me just Wolfram Alpha it?" Can "Wolfram Alpha" become a verb? That seems to be the true test of online phenomena anymore--can you verb it?
When I was in graduate school, we still used books as our primary research materials. I only touched a computer to use the *brand new* computerized card catalog and to type my essays and papers. I have the feeling that the world of higher education is very different now.
