My first-grader's friend visited yesterday and they worked on a jigsaw puzzle together. 
"Eureka!" my son called out as he found the piece they were looking for. "Hey, Mom, do you know what 'eureka' means?"
"Sure," I told him. "It means 'I found it'."
"You're wrong," I was informed. "It means 'YESSSSSSSSS' in Science."
Doing your taxes is a lot like working on a jigsaw puzzle--but not the 100-piece kind that first-graders do. Tax preparation is more like a 2,000-piece, super-difficult puzzle that has the same picture on both sides, rotated 45 degrees for extra difficulty.
My dad's an accountant, and he always thought it was important for us to learn how to do our own taxes. That was back when the 1040-EZ was new, so it wasn't too terrible. We'd fill in the forms and he would check them for us, and answer questions if we had any. I always had questions. I'm very grateful that now there is tax software to make the tax puzzle a little easier.
