I grew up before the infomercial days, but we did have our share of "As Seen on TV" stuff. That was back when your choice of payment included C.O.D., not a debit card. (And back when my mom could put a dollar in the mailbox along with ten unstamped letters, and the mailman would stamp them and send them on their way.) 
I used to love it when certain catalogs showed up in the mail. It's a good thing I didn't have a way to call and order all the stuff I wanted. I think it was a combination of the descriptions that all ended in exclamation points that would get my ten-year-old self wishing for great stuff like shaped ice-cube trays, personalized toothbrush holders, and little birds that would tip over and "sip" your drink. You know, the useful things.
My kids have never seen most of those catalogs, but the companies survive on the Internet. And now you can get awesome stuff like the Snuggie! Plus there are awesome funnel pitchers for pouring pancake or cupcake batter (wouldn't those be great on Saturday mornings?) and remote-controlled manta rays. Don't forget the personalized pocket toothpick holder.
