It wasn't too long ago that cups with lids were considered "kid stuff." (We still ask for a cup with a lid when we take our first-grader out to eat.) Sippy cups were a boon to parents who were tired of wiping up their small children's spilled drinks.
But somewhere along the line, it became the norm for adults to carry cups with lids everywhere they went. But those adult sippy cups aren't filled with apple juice or milk. 
Grownups carry coffee in their sippy cups.
Personally, I think it's a stroke of genius. In those pre-cupholder days, I was the victim more than once of a hot beverage in a ceramic mug that made its way off the dashboard and into my lap. (And I couldn't even sue McDonald's, because I'd brought that cup of coffee from home.)
I've been through a few sippy cups over the years. I won't deny that the ones with handles are nice, especially when you're multitasking. I'm usually multitasking. But I eventually moved on to a cup with a bookstore logo on it, which brought me a ten-percent discount at that bookstore's café. Those lattes were good. After that cup was knocked off a table and broken, I couldn't find just the right replacement. I'm picky about my sippy cups.
Finally I received a terrific cup as a birthday gift. It's stainless steel, which keeps my coffee hot for hours. And I can close the lid on it, which makes it nearly spillproof.
Except when it's accidentally turned upside-down in your coupon box. That wasn't pretty.
