Yesterday I bought a birthday candle in the shape of a number 7. That's for my first-grader's birthday tomorrow. 
That's right; my little guy is turning 7. And though this weekend we are having some relatives and neighbors to celebrate his special day, that's not enough for him.
He wants a "friend party."
The last time I hosted a birthday party with first-grade boys, we had a piñata--in the dining room. Suffice it to say I am ten years older and wiser now. That piñata was a recipe for disaster. One child who apparently aspired to be the next Manny Ramirez stepped up to bat, took a swing, and gave one of his classmates a concussion.
It's never fun for the hostess of a birthday party to call a child's mom and let her know that her son was clobbered before he even got any candy.
I bought invitations and am planning the party in two weeks. That will give me some time to come up with some games and activities that won't lead to injuries.
(Who am I kidding? These are first-grade boys. Someone is going to get hurt. I just hope the damage is limited to something a Sponge-Bob band-aid can repair.)
