I've mentioned before that I love to read. In fact, last year I read 97 books (yes, I counted!) But I don't judge a book based on its New York Times Bestseller List status. 
I'm always happy to get book recommendations from friends and relatives, and I follow up on those, looking for the books in the library or bookstore. But I don't want to read a book that everybody's reading. If Oprah is shilling it on her show, I'm not bothering with it. Books (or series) that become national obsessions just don't interest me.
I guess I'm more a fan of the underdog when it comes to books. There are so many good books out there that are forgotten about because their authors aren't celebrities or haven't been recruited for the talk-show circuit. I've found more treasures on remainder tables than I have when browsing the Bestseller List.
So branch out a little! There are so many great characters in books--not just certain scrupulous vampires, Jersey Girl detectives and wizard wannabes. Find a book that hasn't been made into a movie. Instead of consulting the newspaper for a book review, ask a friend--or a librarian. You won't regret it.

Nice article, and great deals on books, i almost always buy mine used if i can. there are so many good ones out there. i have a few friends that read a lot more than me, and they are where i get most of my ideas.
