Who remembers Flintstones Vitamins? No, not the crummy gummy ones they have now. But the classic super-compressed sugar shapes of Fred and Barney. I think they used to come in purple, pink and orange if I'm not mistaken. I loved those as a kid. Granted we only got to have them once in a while. Since they tasted sooo good, that must've meant they weren't so good for you. So mom quickly switched us over to pills as soon as we were old enough to swallow them. (Yeah, we never had any "good" sugary or chocolate cereal either. Forget Fruity Pebbles!)
Thing is, a few years back, I was talking about the ol' Flintstones vitamins with a co-worker and he had the same reaction. They were like "heathy candy!" So sure enough, the next day he brought in a new bottle of them and we passed 'em around the office. And let me tell you... they're horrible! Either my taste buds have grown and changed or they radically altered the formula. Or both. Seriously. I took like two bites then spit that sucker out. And yeah, I tried a few different flavors just to be sure. Most people agreed. Sigh, another fond childhood memory crushed by evil taste buds.
For you curious folk out there (like myself), I just took a peek to see what characters are included these days and was shocked at how many Bedrock residents are representin'! Even the Great Gazoo!!!

On a side note, I never had any trouble swallowing pills. Which is good, 'cause I probably take about 6 or 7 daily between vitamins, allergy meds, Lipitor, etc. My sister on the other hand, has always had trouble. She'll probably kill me if she ever reads this, but well, let's hope she doesn't... Ever since I can remember (and yes, she STILL does this), she has had such a hard time swallowing pills. When she was little, I remember my mother breaking up the pills and putting them in marshmallows, which kind of worked. But for her to swallow a pill, there's only one way she'll do it. She can't do more than one at a time, and she has to be standing up. Then she'll tilt her head back as far as she can, open her mouth as wide as she can and place the pill as far back in her mouth as her arm can reach. Add about 60 gallons of water and she'll eventually get that pill swallowed after a good 15 minutes or so. Blows my mind every time I see it.
And while we're speaking about vitamins, any one out there remember King Vitamin cereal? I don't remember too much, except for some reason it was really tasty! And there was some crazy guy with a crown on the box. He would be the King. I could go for a bowl right about now. I wonder if they still make it even. And on that crazy note...

Haha! I took the Flintstone vitamins up until a couple of years ago. I've since discovered Centrum Chewables (for adults!). Like your sister, I can't swallow pills. I usually break them into several pieces and swallow each separately. And for the pills you're not supposed to break, I chew up a saltine cracker, and just as I'm getting ready to swallow it, I throw the pill in my mouth and swallow the whole thing down. That's all that will work for me. And I can't believe I just embarrassed myself by telling that.
I'm pretty sure King Vitamin is still on the shelves. I've never tried it, but I always see it when I'm buying my Fruit Loops.
Have a great day, Andrew!
Man, does that bring back memories. I haven't thought about those things in years! Now you've got me thinking of my childhood. Saturday morning cartoons are probably my fondest memories. Garfield & Friends, TMNT, Transformers, He-man. Gotta love it.
You've also got me thinking I need to start taking vitamins again. Thanks for the coupons. Cheers!
I too haven't thought about them in years. But I never heard of vitamin cereal.
Pills are not a problem for me. What I hate is drinking foul tasting cough syrups!
Tish - Saltine crackers, huh? I wonder if there's a physical reason or more mental for this pill aversion. I'm sure there are a ton of people with the same problem, or else they wouldn't have made Centrum Chewables! And you better hook me up with some King Vitamin!
@CG - All good stuff, except Transformers. I just never got into those guys. But Garfield & Friends, TMNT, He-Man, awesome stuff. And yes, go take some vitamins. Your older healthier self will thank you.
@PD - Well it wasn't exactly vitamin cereal, it was just called King Vitamin and it was a typical crunchy corn cereal in the shape of stars I think. It must've had like 1% more vitamins then other cereals I bet.
@Jeslyn - It's weird, because for some reason I love the taste of some cough syrups like Robitussin!
Yup, I remember them AND wanted them, but my mom was real good about seeing that we got well rounded meals and thought we didn't need any! I was bummed about that. I have been taking supplements for years now. I loved when I could get those packs that had all the pills in them ~ never had a problem swolling and could swollow all of them at the same time! How's that??? But alas, I now take mine in liquid natural source form so no more pills or chewy gummy bears (to desire!). My wife has great difficulty swolling pills, so she is happy with the liquids too! I think the best come from Network Marketing companies that have been around a while ~ they couldn's stay in business if people were not getting results! My opinion and I am sticking to it ~ of course it's nice when they not only don't cost you, but bring far more int to boot! But my retail customers love them too.
Can't force vitamins down whatever flavour or shape they the marketing gurus make them into. Doesn't apply to just vitamins have a real pill phobia must have gagged on something in the past. They sound fun but no chance for me!!
Found this post very useful, thanks
