What two simple words can create such joy and pleasure amongst the very young, and yet instill fear and dread into young parents? No, not Chuck E. Cheese (that's technically three words). I'm talking about... SNOW DAY!
As I'm writing this, it's a total Winter Wonderland outside, despite the fact that winter technically doesn't start for another week or so. It's coming down real hard now and the neighboring houses and fir trees are blanketed in white. Yeah, it's really pretty gorgeous out right now. But that feeling will pass in a few hours when I'm forced to go outside in the frigid cold and start sweating by shoveling it all. Bleh.
Growing up in New York, I actually loved having the full four seasons all year round. It was pretty textbook in terms of the seasons. But about 5 or 6 years ago that really changed. Now it seems for the most part we have two seasons: brutally hot summers and crazy winters. With the exception of a few scattered REALLY cold days, it's actually been semi warm up until a few weeks ago. Who woulda thought I'd be comfortable without a jacket while Trick or Treating the last day of October? People blame global warming (which is probably true). Me? I just think Mother Nature's having one heck of a bender...
Last year we had a wallop of a storm, followed by another wallop which ended up piling the snow well over a foot outside. The really sad part? I tried building a snowman with my oldest son, and well... I just couldn't do it. I literally stopped and said, "Huh. How the heck are you supposed to make one of these?" Looking back at my childhood, I don't think I ever made a snowman. Snow forts, snowball fights and tons of snow tunnels, yes. But a snowman, not really. So, seeing as how he was crazy obsessed with the world of Thomas the Tank Engine, I decided to make a snow train instead. Gordon's his favorite, so we made a Snow Gordon instead. And granted, it would've looked like "something" made out of snow to an average passerby, we both knew it was Gordon and had a blast building and then destroying it. We'll see how good the snow is later today. If it's packable, we'll make something.
Anyways, it's been so busy with work lately I haven't had much time to blog on here. So my apologies, but it's nice to sit back and enjoy the "artwork in progress" that's happening right outside my window right now. And if any of you folks from Arizona or California or even down South are jealous, feel free to head on over this afternoon and take some of the snow off my driveway back with you. Oh, and just be sure to avoid the yellow snow...

I guess I shouldn't tell you that we've had temps in the 70s all week!
Seriously, it was 75 degrees yesterday.
As for your brutally hot summers, I'm sure ours are probably much worse! But you definitely have us beat when it comes to brutal winters.
Stay safe and warm!
Snow...what's that? I'm from Louisiana and I've only actually seen honest to God snow once in my life here. Yeah, I probably shouldn't tell Tish that we had a record high of 82 degrees here last weekend!!! That's in December. Come and spend a week in Louisiana in August and you will never complain about cold ever again. 115 degrees without a heat index and humidity of 95%. That my friend, is a brutal summer. We have four seasons here, too. Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Christmas
@Tish - No, please don't tell me that. It's probably in the 30s today, but it's been a total ice brigade the past few days. Everyone's driveways are like a hockey rink!
@CG - Hmm... You have a point there. I'll take the icy snow any day of the week over insanely hot and humid summers. Now I know why people tend to move slower in the south. You have to!
