Funny, but I never pictured my mind as having corners. More like rounded edges I'd say... Anyways, with two young kids, everyday is a new adventure and a new set of memories to tuck into my mental scrapbook. And for some reason it got me thinking about memories of my childhood. How far back can I remember?
I've got a lot of memories from my teenage years on and some more fuzzy general ones from being a pre-teen. But I tried to think of the oldest memory I have. I definitely have a very clear picture of the first day of kindergarten. I'm holding my mom's hand (I was super crazy shy then and would literally cling to her legs often) and we're walking up the loooong hallway towards my kindergarten class. I don't recall anything else from that day, just the long hallways and I picture my mom's legs and her hand holding mine. I think I was excited, scared, nervous, anxious, all at once.
But I have a memory even older than that. It's a bit fuzzier but I remember sitting in circle time at nursery school when our teacher was reading a book to us. I don't recall the title but it was about a boy named Ned who kept having good and bad things happen to him. It was a funny book and would say things like "Bad luck: Ned fell out of an airplane. Good luck: Ned landed on a haystick." I just remember finding that book hilarious and discussing it with my dad who laughed and would constantly read it to me and joke about the good luck and bad luck angle.
That's about as far back as I can remember. And part of me wonders if our 4 1/2 year old will retain memories of any of his actions nowadays when he's older. Sure these days we have better cameras, digital camcorders and whatnot to immortalize these moments (even blogs!), but will any of that help spark his memories when he's older? Or will they just be pictures documenting his past?
So, my dear readers (yeah, that's you if you're still reading this far)... what are your oldest memories? How far back can you remember? I'm real curious to know!
