So for most kids across the country, today's the first day of school. (Our 4 year old actually starts tomorrow at preschool...) For older kids it's the end of a carefree summer and time to buckle down. In other words, a day of dread. For younger kids, school is still equal to "fun" and a chance to see your friends, act like a "big kid" and meet your new teacher.
For parents, it's the opposite. If you've got real young ones, you'll probably spend most of the day worried sick that something horrible's happened like little Emily's lost her favorite Boo Boo Kitty stuffed animal or that little Tommy just couldn't make it to the bathroom in time... Not to mention the paste eating, head-bumping and lost lunches that are bound to happen as well. And if you're not worrying about any of that (sorry if I just made you worry about it), that's probably because you're already on the phone to the school checking to see if everything's okay. Which it is. Just like it was 10 minutes ago when you called...
But for you parents of older kids, particularly teenagers... this post is dedicated to you. That's because today isn't a sad day, it's a beautiful day. Your son or daughter is furthering his or her education in a warm, caring and nurturing environment as they... Ah heck. Who are you trying to kid? Today's the first day of school. In other words, it's like your very own Get Out of Jail Free card. So crack open the champagne, crank up the music and party till the sun goes down... or the school bus returns at the end of the day. Whichever comes first.

One Response to “The First Day of School Blues”
Good post - my oldest son just started kindergarten. My wife and I fall into the first category of parents you described! But we (err....my wife) did resist the temptation to call the school to see how he was doing.
