I wasn't sure what to write today. Do I do some sort of somber retrospective? Tell my "where were you on September 11" story? Remind everyone not to forget? I don't think I'll do any of that actually. Sure we should never forget 9/11 and I'll certainly never forget the e-mail I got from my friend Dave who was down in Washington, D.C. at the time. One line in his short e-mail still sticks with me to this day: "The Pentagon is burning."
But I'm not going to go on about the past or discuss the war in Iraq, etc. Instead I'll talk about the present. And the future.
As human beings we suffer. From the moment we're born and take our first breath (followed by the first cry) to the moment we die, we definitely suffer. But we also laugh, love, smile and share. We find peace in different ways. We learn from the past. We make mistakes. We learn again. But through it all we do one thing that hasn't stopped once. As a species, we live. We move on, get past serious illnesses and grow stronger, even as we grow more diverse. And while there are plenty of people (if you can call them that) in this world who seem to bring everything a few steps backwards, there are also plenty of great people doing good things out there to bring us a few steps forward. It could be something as big as running your own animal rescue center or a simple-yet-heartfelt gesture like thanking someone for making you smile. So if you do just one good thing today for yourself, one good thing for a friend, one good thing for a family member, you're already taking one more step towards a better tomorrow. As Journey said time after time on your '80s radio, "Be Good to Yourself." The rest will follow.
