I'm pretty depressed right now. Just saw the news that Yankees longtime announcer Phil Rizzuto died earlier today. Yes he was pretty old and been kind of sick for awhile, but I hadn't heard anything lately. I remember watching the Yankees almost religiously as a kid with Phil and Bill White announcing each game. White with his "straight man" approach and deep perfect radio voice, and Rizzuto with his nasally, loud "HOLY COW DID YOU SEE THAT?" comment after just about every pitch. Just a shame. I'll probably go buy a Yankees T-shirt or something now.
But that's not the only reason I'm depressed. This weekend, one of my favorite comic artists, Mike Wieringo, passed away. He was only 44 years young, a vegetarian and in seemingly great shape. I don't know how many of you readers are into comics in the least bit (I spent 10 years working in the industry), but Mike was a great, fun artist who drew the Flash, Robin, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, among others. But he was also one of the nicest, sweetest, down-to-earth guys you could meet. And that says a lot for an industry chock full of big babies. If you're interested, you can read more about him on my comics blog. But that one was a real shocker that I'm still real depressed over.
And of course I just read about yet ANOTHER major toy recall due to dangerous magnets and... yep, here it is again, lead paint. This time around, it's some of Mattel's Barbie, Batman, Polly Pocket and Cars toys. I'm really sick to my stomach over this one, right on the heels of the Thomas train recall and Fisher-Price's major toy recall for Dora, Diego, Sesame Street and more toys. I'm worried enough about my kids putting small things in their mouths or getting their hands on knives or scissors. Now I can't even leave them alone with a single toy without worrying.
Sorry, I didn't mean to turn this blog into a downer. And I'll end with a bunch of coupons, once again, for flowers. Though this time I've got a ton of sympathy bouquets in mind...

DEFINITELY go get something Yankees-related, and maybe a comic book or two, as well. Commemorate and celebrate, Andrew. It's the way they live on through us and our memories of not only them, but the part they played in our lives.
Hey Suzanne, thanks. I'm definitely a lot better today; was just in a big funk yesterday with bad news after bad news after bad news, etc. On top of having a 4-year-old with an ear infection (despite having tubes put in like 3 months ago)... But yeah, I hear ya and plan to commemorate and celebrate.
